Marquee heater hire in the UK: what to specify before you book
Marquee heating is hired for a fixed window, so the decision is driven by available power, weather risk, safety clearances and guest comfort rather than long-term running cost. This page explains how suppliers size hire heating and what a quote should show, so you can compare offers on the same basis.
How many heaters does a marquee need?
Sizing is based on marquee volume, expected outside temperature, wall and roof construction, door openings and guest numbers. As an indicative planning figure, a lined marquee in UK winter conditions often needs roughly 45-70W of heat per cubic metre, so a 10m x 20m marquee with a 3m average height (about 600 cubic metres) commonly needs in the region of 27-42kW. This is a planning range only: a supplier should confirm it with a site-specific calculation and the actual weather forecast.
Electric radiant versus indirect diesel heaters
Electric radiant heaters are quiet, produce no combustion products and can be mounted inside the marquee, which makes them suitable for smaller structures, seated dining and venues with a usable power supply. Their limit is available electrical capacity: high-output radiant heating needs three-phase or a generator for larger marquees.
Indirect-fired diesel heaters sit outside and duct warm air in. They deliver high output without a large electrical supply, which is why they dominate large winter events, but they need external space, fuel, ducting routes and generator power for the fan. Direct-fired heaters introduce combustion products and moisture into the space and should not be used inside an occupied marquee.
Power supply is usually the deciding constraint
Before requesting quotes, confirm what supply exists on site: single-phase 13A/16A/32A sockets, three-phase, or nothing at all. A 32A single-phase circuit supports roughly 7kW, so multi-heater electric setups quickly exceed a domestic-style supply. If a generator is needed, that cost belongs in the comparison alongside fuel and delivery.
Ask each supplier to state the total load, the number of circuits required and whether distribution boards, cabling and RCD protection are included. Vague quotes often omit distribution and become more expensive on the day.
Safety, clearances and the venue's rules
Marquee fabric, drapes, table dressing and staging all impose minimum clearances that the manufacturer specifies for each heater. Radiant heaters must be positioned so nothing flammable enters the hot zone, and cabling should be routed away from walkways or protected by matting. Fuel-burning equipment needs separation from exits and from the public.
Confirm the supplier carries public liability insurance, provides a risk assessment and method statement, and will attend for setup and collection. Many venues and local authorities require this documentation before the event.
What a comparable hire quote includes
A clear quote separates heater hire for the stated period, delivery and collection, setup and takedown, generator or distribution equipment, fuel where relevant, standby or out-of-hours support and any damage waiver. Charges are usually per day or per weekend, with weekend and winter peak dates priced higher and booking well ahead of December materially improving availability.
