Ceiling mounted infrared heaters: sizing, height and installation

Ceiling mounting frees wall space, keeps panels out of reach and gives an even downward spread of radiant heat. The trade-off is that mounting height, output and layout have to be right, because a ceiling panel that is too high or underpowered will feel weak at floor level.

How high can a ceiling infrared panel be mounted?

Standard low-temperature infrared panels are generally intended for ceiling heights of about 2.4m to 3m. Above roughly 3m the perceived warmth drops noticeably and higher-temperature radiant heaters designed for the height are usually needed instead. Manufacturers state a maximum mounting height for each product, and that figure should drive the specification rather than a general rule.

Recessed, surface-mounted or suspended

Recessed panels sit flush in a suspended grid ceiling, which suits offices, clinics and classrooms with a 600x600 or 1200x600 module. Surface-mounted panels fix directly to a solid ceiling with a mounting kit and a small air gap, which suits homes and refurbishments. Suspended panels drop on wires where the structural ceiling is high but the desired radiant height is lower.

For plasterboard ceilings, the fixings must reach joists or use appropriately rated anchors, and the panel weight (commonly 8-15kg) must be supported. Recessed installation into a grid ceiling also needs the tile module and any insulation clearances confirmed.

Wattage and layout for even coverage

As an indicative planning figure, a reasonably insulated UK room needs roughly 60-100W per square metre, with the higher end for poor insulation, large glazing or intermittent use. Ceiling mounting favours several smaller panels over one large one, because overlapping coverage avoids a hot spot under the panel and cold corners elsewhere.

Position panels over the areas people occupy: desks, seating, beds or workstations, rather than the geometric centre of the room. Keep the manufacturer's clearance from walls, lighting and any combustible fittings, and avoid mounting directly above a light fitting.

Controls and electrical work

Panels are typically wired to a fused supply and controlled by a wired or wireless thermostat with zoning; a plug-in panel with a portable thermostat is possible but rarely appropriate for a permanent ceiling installation. Each zone should have its own room sensor so occupancy patterns actually reduce use.

Fixed wiring is notifiable electrical work in most UK cases and should be completed by a qualified electrician who issues certification. Ask any supplier whether the price includes the electrical connection, thermostat, commissioning and certification.

Where ceiling mounting is the wrong answer

Very high ceilings, heavily glazed rooms with severe heat loss, or spaces where the ceiling cannot take a fixing are better served by wall-mounted panels or high-temperature radiant heaters. Bathrooms need products with an appropriate IP rating and correct zone placement.
