Cheapest electric heating to run in the UK

Running cost is decided by three numbers: your unit rate in pence per kWh, how many units of heat each kWh of electricity produces, and how many hours you actually heat. Get those three right and the ranking is straightforward, which is why headline claims about a particular heater being cheap are rarely useful on their own.

Which electric heating is cheapest to run?

Per unit of delivered heat, a well-designed heat pump is cheapest because it returns roughly 2.5 to 3.5 kWh of heat for each kWh of electricity, so at a 27p unit rate the delivered heat costs around 8-11p per kWh. Every resistive option - infrared panels, panel heaters, electric radiators and fan heaters - delivers one kWh of heat per kWh of electricity, so it costs the full unit rate. Storage heaters can beat that only while charging on a cheap off-peak rate. In small or intermittently used spaces, a zoned resistive system can still produce the lowest bill because far fewer hours and rooms are heated.

The arithmetic that decides your bill

Cost of heat = (unit rate in pence per kWh ÷ system efficiency) × kWh of heat needed. A 1kW infrared panel run for four hours uses 4kWh; at 27p that is £1.08 regardless of the brand. The same 4kWh of heat from a heat pump at a seasonal efficiency of 3.0 uses about 1.33kWh, or roughly 36p.

This is why running-cost comparisons should always start from the heat a room loses, not from the wattage printed on a heater. Two panels of identical wattage cost identical amounts to run for the same hours; the differences suppliers advertise come from controls, placement and how long the heater is actually on.

Where each option is genuinely cheapest

Heat pumps win where the whole property is heated steadily through the winter and the building can take the emitter and installation work. Off-peak storage heating can be competitive where a time-of-use tariff gives a materially cheaper overnight rate and the household tolerates heat arriving on a fixed cycle. Infrared and electric panel heating are cheapest where the heated volume and hours are small: a home office, a spare room, a workshop, a hall used two evenings a week.

Installation cost is part of running cost over any realistic ownership period. Spending several thousand pounds to save a modest amount in a room used a few hours a week rarely pays back, while a low-capital zoned heater in that room often does.

Tariffs, off-peak windows and standing charges

Unit rates change every quarter and vary by region and payment method, so treat any figure quoted on a supplier site - including ours - as indicative and check your own bill. Compare the full picture: unit rate, standing charge, and whether an off-peak window genuinely matches when you need heat.

Time-of-use tariffs only reduce heating cost if you can shift the load. Without storage - thermal mass, a cylinder or a battery - a cheap night rate does very little for heaters that run in the evening.

How to check a claim before you buy

Ask any supplier claiming low running costs for the assumed unit rate, the assumed hours per day, the room heat loss used, and whether the figure covers one room or the whole property. If those four inputs are missing, the number cannot be verified.

A sensible shortlist

  • Take your current unit rate and standing charge from a recent bill.
  • Estimate heat demand per room rather than using heater wattage alone.
  • Divide the unit rate by system efficiency to get pence per kWh of delivered heat.
  • Count real occupied hours per room, not 24-hour operation.
  • Include installation and controls over your expected ownership period.
  • Ask for the assumptions behind any advertised saving figure.
